2–3 minutes

Spring is widely considered the “sweet spot” for visiting Fuerteventura, offering a perfect transition between the powerful winter swells and the intense summer heat. Known as the “Island of Eternal Spring,” this season provides mild temperatures, uncrowded line-ups, and versatile surfing conditions suitable for every skill level.

Why Spring is the Best Time to Visit

  • Pleasant Climate: Daily temperatures hover between 20°C and 26°C (68°F–79°F), making it ideal for outdoor activities like hiking and cycling without the summer’s extreme heat.
  • Warm Waters: The Atlantic begins to warm up to 19–21°C, allowing for comfortable sessions in a light 2/2 mm wetsuit or even boardshorts on sunny May afternoons.
  • The “Quiet” Season: Following the Easter holidays, the island enters a peaceful off-season. You’ll find quieter beaches, more affordable hotel rates, and a more authentic local atmosphere.
  • Moderate Winds: While summer brings heavy trade winds for kitesurfing, spring winds are typically more moderate, ensuring smoother water and more manageable conditions for traditional surfing. Surfing in Spring: Waves for Every Level

Spring offers a unique mix of Atlantic groundswells and emerging wind waves, ensuring that almost every part of the island has a working break.

LevelIdeal Conditions & Spots
BeginnersSoft, predictable waves at El Cotillo, Playa Blanca, and Playa de Esquinzo. Many surf schools operate heavily in spring due to the safety of the waves.
IntermediatePunta Blanca and Rocky Point offer long, noble waves that are perfect for practicing maneuvers and building confidence on reef breaks.
AdvancedWhile the massive winter swells have calmed, spots like The Bubble (near El Hierro) and Majanicho still fire consistently, providing technical reef breaks with fewer crowds than in January.

Spring Events and Activities

Beyond the waves, spring is a vibrant time for Canarian culture:

  • Carnival (March): Many towns like Puerto del Rosario and Antigua celebrate with vibrant parades, music, and the “Burial of the Sardine”.
  • Holy Week (April): Experience traditional processions in the capital, Puerto del Rosario.
  • Feaga (April/May): A major agricultural and livestock fair near Pozo Negro showcasing regional products like Majorero goat cheese.
  • Día de Canarias (May 30): An island-wide cultural festival featuring traditional costumes, dance, and food.
