The north coast of Fuerteventura has earned itself the nickname “Hawaii of Europe,” thanks to its volcanic reefs and the sheer range of wave types on offer. Here’s how those waves actually show up along the coast, from Corralejo down to El Cotillo.
How Waves Break
Spilling waves (beginner to intermediate)
- Punta Elena, inside (Corralejo): the inside section breaks gently, with soft white water and green waves that make it a safe spot to learn.
- Majanicho, inside: this sheltered bay throws up mellow, flat right-handers that spill rather than pitch — a favourite with longboarders.
Plunging waves (advanced to expert)
- The Bubble / Hierro Right (near Majanicho): the swell hits a shallow volcanic reef here and jacks up fast into a hollow, explosive barrel.
- Los Lobos: on a good day, this point break throws up high-speed tubing sections.
Surging waves You’ll find these along the steep, rocky cliffs of the “North Track,” the dirt road between Corralejo and El Cotillo. The swell hits the rock face directly here without ever forming a rideable wave.
Types of Surf Breaks
Beach breaks
- El Cotillo (Piedra Playa): the north’s best-known beach break, with a sandy bottom and several peaks. Expect gentle foam for beginners in summer and heavy, closing-out barrels come winter.
- Playa del Moro (Corralejo Dunes): a consistent, sandy beach break that’s ideal if you’re just starting out.
Reef breaks
- El Hierro: a world-class volcanic reef with a powerful left and a shorter, punchier right.
- Punta Blanca: a swell magnet that’s generally more forgiving than Hierro, which makes it popular with improving intermediates.
Point breaks
- Los Lobos: just off Corralejo, this small island is often named as home to one of Europe’s longest right-hand point breaks.
Rivermouth breaks Fuerteventura has no permanent rivers, so you won’t find this wave type on the island.
